The Schnütgen Museum houses a precious collection of medieval works of art in one of Cologne’s oldest churches. Many of them are worth a visit on their own, such as the radiant bust of Parler, the expressive crucifix of St George or the unique so-called Heribertkamm, a filigree ivory carving.
The exhibition ranges from wood and stone sculptures, precious goldsmithery and stained glass to rare ivories and textiles.
A special feature of the museum is its largest exhibition room, which is itself over 1000 years old: the tranquillity and aura of the Romanesque Church of St Cecilia and the special proximity to the objects invite visitors to experience the works of art in all their spiritual radiance and beauty.
Outstanding works of art from all areas of the collection are regularly placed in new contexts. It is therefore worth coming back because there is always something new to discover in the collection.
