Historisches Museum Frankfurt

Collections of artworks and artefacts relating to the history of Frankfurt, spanning the period from the Middle Ages to the present day.

Founded in 1878, the Frankfurt Historical Museum is the city’s oldest museum. Together with the Junges Museum Frankfurt and the Frankfurt Porcelain Museum, it forms a family of museums. It collects, preserves, researches, educates and exhibits Frankfurt’s cultural heritage. As a city museum, it is a place of knowledge as well as critical information, reflection and discussion on Frankfurt’s past, present and future; as a history museum, it links urban themes with general social history.

The Historisches Museum am Römerberg is like a small neighbourhood. It consists of several buildings surrounding a public museum square. With its five historic buildings, the Saalhof showcases 800 years of Frankfurt’s architectural history. The exhibition building, which opened in 2017, is a modern museum structure whose design is inspired by Frankfurt’s Old Town.
