Bautzner Straße Memorial Dresden

The Bautzner Straße Memorial in Dresden is a place of remembrance, education and encounter. It commemorates the victims of political persecution in the Soviet Occupation Zone and the GDR, documents their stories and makes them permanently accessible to the public. It also offers those affected a space for exchange and encounter. At the same time, the memorial researches the history of the site. It examines the causes, structures, methods and consequences of dictatorships, as well as the ideologies underpinning them. The findings are incorporated into historical and political education work. In this context, the relationship to fundamental and human rights forms a central level of reflection, thereby establishing a link to current political and social developments. The memorial maintains cooperation with numerous partner organisations, educational institutions, museums, archives and associations from Saxony, Germany and neighbouring countries in Eastern Central Europe. The cross-border exchange focuses in particular on working with eyewitnesses, the history of political persecution and opposition, and the transformation of the political system in East Germany and the states of the former ‘Eastern Bloc’. Furthermore, through educational, discussion and other events, as well as exhibitions, the memorial offers opportunities to engage with a wide range of historical and current topics.
