Schauspiel Leipzig
O Schauspiel Leipzig sees itself as the municipal theatre for the city of Leipzig. Since 2013, artistic director Enrico Lübbe and his team have been implementing their concept of a progressive municipal theatre – reflecting the diversity and breadth of interests that can be experienced in Leipzig on a daily basis.
In four venues and other locations we stage 25 new productions alongside our extensive repertoire each season.
O main stage is characterised by strong directorial styles and classical texts from Euripides to Shakespeare. The Diskothek is dedicated to contemporary drama. Works by young authors are premiered here, and contemporary dramatic texts are re-enacted and supplemented with new perspectives. With its residence in the former cotton mill, Schauspiel Leipzig closes a significant gap between the working methods and aesthetics of the independent scene, international festivals and municipal theatre operations. Artists from Germany and Europe work on their projects at the residence during production stays lasting several weeks. The newest venue at Schauspiel Leipzig is Foyer 1, which opened in 2022: This venue provides space for theatrical projects, readings, discussions and parties.
Schauspiel Leipzig is a pioneer in the field of inclusion: since 2013, there has been at least one performance per month with live audio description specifically for blind and visually impaired people. Performances with sign language e English surtitles are also offered.
