The Stadttheater Bremerhaven was founded in 1867 as a multi-genre theatre. Every season, a broad repertoire of music theatre, drama, ballet, young theatre and the Niederdeutsche Bühne «Waterkant» as well as concerts by the Philharmonisches Orchester Bremerhaven (chief musical director: Marc Niemann) can be experienced. Artistic director Lars Tietje and his team aim to open up the theatre further to the city and urban society. To this end, they are developing new venues and formats. Since 2023, the Stadttheater has also organised the annual «Sommerbühne vor dem Stadttheater Bremerhaven» in cooperation with the Department of Culture and neighbouring cultural institutions. For five weeks each year, it offers a programme of theatre, readings, concerts and performances. The municipal theatre has received numerous artistic awards. Among other things, it was awarded the German Federal Theatre Prize in 2015 and named one of the best theatres away from the centres by the trade magazine Die Deutsche Bühne in 2016. In 2023, an opera production by the municipal theatre will be nominated for the German theatre prize DER FAUST. In the same year, the Philharmoisches Orchester Bremerhaven was nominated twice for the OPUS KLASSIK in the categories «Conductor of the Year» and «Symphonic Recording».
